My house-sit in Canberra includes the occasional house-sit at the house-owner family’s beach house at Tuross Head, on the adjacent coastline. Tuross Head is a small coastal village on the south coast of New South Wales on the beautiful east coast of Australia, about 270 kilometres south of Sydney. Because it’s on the closest adjacent coast to Canberra, it's a popular place for Canberrans’ beach houses.
Tuross Head is on the end of a long Peninsula, which separates two estuarine lakes. At the moment, the entrance to the northern-most of those lakes, Coila Lake, is silted up, which gives easy foot access to the five-kilometre-long beach running north from the town.
I went for a walk along this beach. The beach is wild and beautiful, and is quite deserted despite the beautiful, although windy weather. At least, it is this time of the year, in the middle of winter.
Here’s how the beach looks from the town:
Here’s a closer view of the beach:
While I wouldn't normally mind a ten-kilometres return walk along a lovely beach, I only made it about one-and-a-half kilometres before I turned back, because the sand was extremely soft, as you can see from the depth of my footprints in this picture, which makes walking very hard work:
The beach is backed by wild sand dunes that separate it from Coila Lake. I climbed up on the sand dunes for a better view. Here's the view of the rest of the beach that I didn't get to walk on:
From the top of the dunes you can see how they separate the Pacific Ocean (on the left) and Coila Lake.
The ocean water is a lovely aqua colour and crystal clear, with sweet little waves breaking on the sandbar.
That's just typical beautiful Aussie east-coast beach!
