We’re on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, while waiting out the coronavirus restrictions.
Since our initial stay at Kings Beach, Caloundra, we’ve spent the last four months at nearby Alexandra Headland. It’s another nice place to be while we can’t travel.
Alexandra Headland (colloquially known as Alex Headlands, or just Alex) is a long, low headland with long beaches on either side. It’s mostly a suburban area with beachside accommodation. The commercial area of Maroochydore is a couple of kilometres to the north, and Mooloolaba is a kilometre to the south. This is the view from Alex Headland looking toward Maroochydore, with Mount Coolum in the distance:
Alex Headland is a renowned surfing spot. The end of the beach that is tucked in against the headland is called Alex Corner; it’s protected from the prevailing southerly winds, which break the surf up further up the beach.
While the view is great, there’s not much happening on the day I took this photo, but a few people still found it worth going out – it’s always nice just sitting out there bobbing on a day like this:
There’s also a surfing point break that is very popular with long-boarders (Malibu surf board riders). Again, there’s not much happening here on this day. Here are a couple of stand-up paddle boarders enjoying the calm conditions:
As soon as there is any swell everyone turns up, like this:
The rock platform
Alex Headland has a wide rocky platform at sea level running along it, which is great for a low-tide wander around the rock pools. Here it is in the late afternoon:
Alex Headland activities
Lots of other activities go on around Alex Headland – here’s a parasailer making use of the updraft from a sea breeze:
The headland has a nice grassy park with great views, which is popular with picnickers on weekend afternoons:
This is the picnickers' late-afternoon view from the park:
Here are some late-afternoon surfers further up the beach:
Alex Headland is to the right in the picture and that’s Point Cartwright and the Mooloolah river mouth in the left distance.
