Visiting Bridestowe Lavender Estate

 The lavender flowers through December and January, and this season they had 58,000 people come through to see them.  They've got over 100 hectares of lavender Fields and 200 kilometres of lavender rows to spread everyone out in, so it doesn't get too crowded out in the fields. 

Of course, part of the reason for the popularity of the lavender is that it makes a great backdrop for photographs for Facebook and Instagram (and travel blogs)!  The neat lavender rows languidly rolling over the gentle hills into the distance, and the colour contrast between the purple flowers and the red volcanic soil are so picturesque. 

They have finished harvesting this season, so you may wonder why there are still so many bright purple flowers out there.  You can see in some of these pictures some green rows in which the flower heads have been harvested.  

This is because they only harvest part of the crop – while the farm processes lavender to produce lavender oil and uses both the oil and seeds in a wide range of products, its biggest business is simply allowing visitors to stroll through the endless rows of lavender plants.  Their main income comes from admission charges for visitors who like to wander through the lavender flowers, and who then buy lavender laced food, lavender ice cream, and all sorts of lavender themed merchandise in the gift shop. 

The bees like it, too!
